Hockey
What a great achievement for the Penn State hockey team to have a shot at the Frozen Four. You say what is the Frozen Four? It is made of four teams that compete for the #1 spot in the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Nittany Lions finished 25-12-2 for the season and ended one win shy of the Frozen Four. This program is five years old and this past season was a season of firsts. The team was ranked number 1 during the season, earned its first Big Ten Title, first time in the NCAA 16 team field, and set a tournament record for goals in a single game: 10. Coach Guy Gadowsky said, "I don't think anyone will forget this season-it was magical. We learned a lot this year, as a program, as coaches and as individuals as well." What lies in store for the coming season is a good guess but there is a lot to build upon and continued success to look forward to as the players and program continue to mature.
Top Wrestling Program in the Country
The way to finish a season is to win, win, win and have fun doing it. What more can be said of the 2017 NCAA Champion Nittany Lion Wrestling Team. Coach Cael Sanderson says, "Our kids are competitive, regardless of what we're doing. But that's what makes it fun. We just enjoy what we do." Five wrestlers qualified for the NCAA championships and five wrestlers finished on top in every class. So dominant were the Nittany Lions in the preliminary rounds of the 2017 NCAA Championship that heading into the final night of competition that none of the five wrestlers needed to score a single point for the team title. They just went out and won all five anyway. This NCAA title marked the sixth title in seven years with Coach Sanderson at the helm.
